Danger of Government levy on UK gambling industry

Earlier this year the UK gaming industry agreed upon voluntary £4 million funding of the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RiGT), whose purpose is conducting research into ways of preventing and treating gambling addiction.

However so far only £1.7 million has been collected, largely from the sector’s three big players: Ladbrokes, William Hill and Gala Coral, who have each paid £450,000. This leaves a large gap of £2.3 million.

Neil Goulden, CEO of Gala Coral, warns that if other companies in the UK gambling industry do not contribute money voluntarily, the UK government will step in with a statutory levy. He says that such action would look bad for the industry and will make the smaller companies pay more.
