Soccer Teams Corroded by Match Fixing Gambling

Belgian police have launched an investigation into alleged match- fixing by members of several regional soccer teams, including Cercle Brugge, Sint Truiden, and FC Brussels.

The police became suspicious after popular online gambling sites saw a rash of suspiciously high betting on matches last November. The popular gambling sites tipped off the VRT television network, which recently aired a month- long probe into the scandal.

The popular gambling sites saw bets of up to 600,000 euros on games involving Belgium’s smaller club teams, such as on the October 29th game between La Louviere and Sint Truiden, which Louviere surprised fans by winning.

Six hundred thousand euros is about twenty times the amount usually bet at popular gambling sites on bigger club teams like Anderlecht.

There were also bets of up to 230,000 euros at the most popular gambling sites on Sint Truiden losing to its lower- ranked rival Cercle Brugge.

VRT said that as many as 14 players and coaches were paid by a Shanghai- based gambling ring to lose matches by a specific number of points.

League officials said that, if the allegations are confirmed, those coaches and players involved could invoke lifelong bans from the sport, and involved teams will be thrown out of the first division.

Danger of Government levy on UK gambling industry

Earlier this year the UK gaming industry agreed upon voluntary £4 million funding of the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RiGT), whose purpose is conducting research into ways of preventing and treating gambling addiction.

However so far only £1.7 million has been collected, largely from the sector’s three big players: Ladbrokes, William Hill and Gala Coral, who have each paid £450,000. This leaves a large gap of £2.3 million.

Neil Goulden, CEO of Gala Coral, warns that if other companies in the UK gambling industry do not contribute money voluntarily, the UK government will step in with a statutory levy. He says that such action would look bad for the industry and will make the smaller companies pay more.
