Comps for Gamblers Disappearing Rapidly
For the last thirty years, patrons at casinos were able to get some great comps when they played at their favourite casinos. Today, less and less are offering free meals, discounted room prices, and show tickets to their gamers. The reason? The economic slump the United States is currently experiencing. Casinos in Atlantic City saw a major revenue decline in 2007 and out-of-state establishments catering to slot machines stole most of the casinos’ valuable and reliable customers.
While some of the Atlantic City casinos feel that the impending economic recession is a good reason to cut back on the freebies they offer their patrons, others feel that the freebies are what keep their customers coming back night after night. The casinos are beginning to look for ways to attract richer players and ease away from the blue-haired senior crowd that has been a staple of their business for the better part of thirty years. The value of freebies handed out last year was down by 2.4%, the Trump Plaza and the Tropicana seeing significant decreases.
Players are feeling the crunch and they are seeing less and less freebies every time they visit the Atlantic City Casinos. The management staff is going to have to take a real hard look at this situation. Slot machines just over the border in Pennsylvania are very attractive to a patron who feels slighted when they used to feel like a VIP.
The casinos in Atlantic City spent $1.63 billion in freebies all told in 2007 and even though these may have to be what is cut in order to keep from going under, the management recognizes that it is not going to be easy. Instead of cutting them all together, the casinos in Atlantic City are starting to switch their focus and add Las Vegas style attractions, such as spas, shopping outlets, and gourmet restaurants to attract a more upmarket crowd.
Each casino is handling the economic crunch differently, another reason why the comps debate is going on in the city. While Trump Plaza handed out less room comps, they handed out more free drinks. The Tropicana pulled back on their cash handouts, but Bally’s gave out more free rooms. The Borgata evened out with their free room comps but gave out no cash comps, and Harrah’s doubled their spending on entertainment comps. Until they all agree on how to handle the comp situation, their regular customers will continue coming around.
